Whatever [The Science] holds to be the truth, is truth. It is impossible to see reality except by looking through the eyes of [The Science]. That is the fact that you have got to relearn, Winston. It needs an act of self-destruction, an effort of the will.
- Adapted from '1984' by George Orwell-
During the first days of January 2020, initial reports of a newly emerging virus appeared in news broadcasts and print media. The virus had emerged in China and there was some suggestion that there was a long incubation period before disease became apparent in the infected person. The talking heads on the news were expressing concern that the virus might spread. For most, this initial coverage simply merged into the background noise of global events that seeped into their subconscious awareness but raised little real concern. However, for those who could assimilate two simple facts, there was a distinct sense of foreboding. Firstly, prior to the implementation of a governmental response to the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak, hundreds of thousands of people were travelling into and out of China daily. In 2019, there were around 155 million Chinese who travelled internationally and 145 million visitors entering China from other countries [3]. This makes a rough average of just over 800 000 people entering or leaving the country daily. Clearly, a highly infectious disease that appeared to have been present within the Chinese population for several weeks before being recognised and responded to, would soon be almost everywhere in the world given this volume of travel. Inevitably, as the year progressed, the disease did indeed spread worldwide. Soon, government policies across the globe began to impact upon people's daily activities, restricting freedoms and imposing systems of control and coercion which have never been seen in modern times. Most of these were adopted following advice and predictions issued by a small group of people attached to, or associated with, specific scientific and medical organisations, corporations, or funding groups. Affiliates of these organisations adopted and promoted policies of information control as rehearsed in a pandemic preparedness exercise that took place in October 2019 [456]. The name of the exercise was ‘Event 201’. A name that coincidentally refers to year 20, month 1 – January, 2020 – when the SARS-CoV-2 virus began to spread across the globe.
